Inspired by the genre wuxia, translated literally as "martial hero", and reading much like mythology, Escape from the Cottonwood Chamber is an anthropomorphic martial arts saga. The central figure is Xiao-tep the Ankh-fish of 100,000 Sorrows and Beauty. Born to two gods from two separate religions, his father demands Xiao-tep be eaten upon birth so as not to cause problems with the Heavens. Xiao-tep's mother, however, has different plans and hides the birth of her son for many years until her lover discovers her treachery. From there, the demon Ketsueki Sato and the trickster Loki ensnare Xiao-tep to serve the demon in his lair, The Cottonwood Chamber.
